Hello there!  My name is Josh Bassan, and I would like to be you or your child’s tutor.  I have a very flexible schedule and charge $50/hour with a 1 hour minimum.  I teach in the comfort of my own home or nearby Sherwood Regional Library.  I can meet with you elsewhere for an additional charge of 50 cents/mile round trip.  Your satisfaction with my service is guaranteed or you will not be charged*.  Below is my background:

Math: In high school I won the AP Calculus Award and received 5’s on both the AP Calc BC exam as well as the AP Statistics exam, which was a self-taught course my senior year.  I took Algebra II and Trigonometry as a freshman, having taken Algebra I and Geometry previously.  While my calculus and statistics are rusty, I am still able to tutor geometry, prealgebra, algebra (I and II), and trigonometry.  I graduated high school in 2001 from Hawaii Preparatory Academy (http://www.hpa.edu).  Given the AP courses I completed, I did not take any mathematics in college.

Notable Achievement: Helped a Manassas high school student who was failing Algebra II to consistently score A’s on her tests and quizzes, as well as show her how to teach herself to where she was more independent.

Japanese: My mother is from Japan and thus I grew up speaking it.  In fact, here’s an anecdote about how I learned: when I was five years old, my parents put me on a plane to live with my grandparents for three months (they don’t speak English) and attend a local kindergarten.  When I came back, I had almost forgotten English!  My kindergarten teacher here in the States called my parents to ask if there was something wrong with me.

Academically speaking, I did take a few courses while at GU to improve my literacy and vocabulary.  As a result, I was able to pass the Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level One.  I also spent a semester at Sophia University during my junior year of college.  I’ve visited about 10 times total during my lifetime.  The last time I was there was October ‘09 for a friend’s wedding.

Chinese: I graduated from Georgetown University in 2005 with a BA in Chinese.  I received the Chinese Award upon graduation.  I received a 7 on the HSK Proficiency Exam, tested Superior in speaking and listening and Advanced in reading and writing according to ILR guidelines (http://www.govtilr.org/).  I also spent a semester at Peking University during my junior year.

English: I grew up in this country.  Given my linguistic skills I’m very comfortable tutoring anyone learning English as a foreign language.  I can apply the same principles in learning Chinese or Japanese to English in terms of drilling vocabulary, grammar, understanding of connotations, etc.  As for a native speaker, while I always did well in my English courses, I’ve always found the grading and evaluation thereof to be so subjective to where I can’t see myself tutoring someone above the high school level.

About me: I grew up on my parents’ orange orchard in Hawaii and moved to Washington, DC for college.  I’ve been living in Northern Virginia since finishing school and own a small data processing business.  I tutor to supplement my income as well as add variety to my workload.

In order to limit my legal liability, I am tutoring as an employee of my corporation, ValuData Discovery, Inc., a Virginia state corporation.

*In the event of hiring me for longer than a 1 hour session, dissatisfaction must be declared after the first hour.  Does not apply to travel fee.
